The main character, Toru, has a strong need for solitude, but doesn’t want to get close to anyone because of his fear of making mistakes. He is terrified of being fooled again by others. He is also very introverted and spends a lot of time reading the books that he carries around in the original volume and his apartment. Toru is also a very busy person, and while he spends a lot of time alone, he often talks on the phone with his friends or tries to meet up with them in person. When he does finally get around to visiting his friend, Takumi, at his school, he is surprised to see that Takumi doesn’t have a lot of friends. Toru tries to talk to Takumi and his other friends, but his attempts at friendship are rebuffed.
Toru also feels very lonely, most of the time. He is so used to being alone that he has trouble adjusting when he is forced to be around people. He is somewhat standoffish and doesn’t want to be too close to anyone because he doesn’t want to make any mistakes again.
