When she first heard of their existence, she decided she was going to keep them out of the war, because she knew what the consequences of that would be. She knew how much the war would affect them, and she knew that they had to be protected from that kind of thing. She didn't want anyone to go through that again.
In the end, she was willing to sacrifice herself for them, because that's what good leaders do.
She had a lot of respect for Tony Stark as a business man and a genius, and she knew he could handle his own with the Avengers. He didn't need her to lead him or guide him like he does with other people. She respected that he could do his own thing and still get what he wanted.
