"We have been asked about what it means for an anime character to be in an anime," creator Moyoco Anno said in a recent interview with IGN. "I thought, 'Why don't you ask the author of the anime?'"
Anno added that she looked at the character's personality type and "found myself relaxing into it."
The series debuted in October 2012, and is based on the five-part manga series by Moyoco Anno. The manga is serialized in Shueisha's Nakayoshi magazine. The story revolves around the life of a high school girl named Watashi, who suddenly discovers herself transported to an alternate world.
In the original manga, the character's name is "Saya." However, the anime series decided to change her name to "Wataru" since it is easier for foreign audiences to pronounce.
In the manga, Saya is an introverted girl who's an artist and a loner. She has no knowledge of the world she's transported to, and cannot speak the language.
