Jasper Queller is the main character in the book The Book of Strange New Things by Michel Faber. The protagonist, who is based on Faber, is a missionary and an evangelical who has been sent to an alien planet called Oasis. The first chapters of the book describe Queller's dismay at being sent to a planet where he cannot even speak the local language. He is uncomfortable and lonely, yet he cannot find any reasons to be unhappy, since he has not yet discovered how to get back home. On his first night, he sees a being in the water who, although it has small legs, swims like a fish. He is fascinated by the being, who seems to be a giant, but also as perplexed by it as Queller is.
The second chapter in which Queller encounters the strange being is titled "The Hitchhiker". In this chapter, Queller has become very fond of the being and has decided to pretend it is his friend. He finds that the being seems to understand him better than he understands it, but he also knows that he cannot tell anyone about it.
