As for the complex, I daresay the image is based on the famous "Man with a Camera" (or on Edward Curtis's "Spirit of the Indian, 1913") by Robert J. Flaherty, which in itself is based on the engraving of John William Hill after the painting by George Catlin. It represents a Lakota chieftain standing in front of a tipi, while a woman enters the tipi.
"Lakotas" are an ethnic group in the Great Plains of North America, consisting of several language groups. They were one of the more powerful tribes in the region but were removed to reservations in 1881. In the United States Census of 2000, their population was 24,928. Lakotas live on reservations in South Dakota, Montana, Nebraska and Wyoming.
Mīrzā Muhammad Tāraghay bin Shāhrukh (Chagatay: میرزا محمد طارق بن شاہ رخ, Persian: میرزا محمد تراغای بن شاہ رخ), better known as Ulugh Beg (الغ بیگ) (22 March 1394 – 27 October 1449), was a Timurid sultan, as well as an astronomer and mathematician.
Ulugh Beg was notable for his work in astronomy-related mathematics, such as trigonometry and spherical geometry, as well as his general interests in the arts and intellectual activities.[1][2] It is thought that he spoke five languages: Arabic, Persian, Turkic, Uzbek Mongolian, and a small amount of Chinese.[3] During his rule (first as a governor, then outright) the Timurid Empire achieved the cultural peak of the Timurid Renaissance through his attention and patronage. Samarkand was captured and given to Ulugh Beg by his father Shah Rukh.
