Stephen Arnold Douglas (April 23, 1813 – June 3, 1861) was an American politician and lawyer from Illinois. A Northern Democrat, he was an influential figure in American politics before the Civil War. He was a proponent of "popular sovereignty," the idea that the people of a state should decide whether to allow slavery, rather than the federal government. Douglas is most well-known for the "Lincoln-Douglas Debates" of 1858, in which he debated against future president Abraham Lincoln, as well as his presidential nomination in the Election of 1860.
