Kothar-wa-Khasis was the god of metalworking, craftsmen, artisans, engineers, architects, inventors, soothsaying, magic, incantations, and spells. He is believed to have occupied the third tier (out of four) in the pantheon, serving the greater deities of the upper two tiers while outranking the lesser deities of the fourth tier. Kothar was responsible for supplying the gods with weapons and for building and furnishing their palaces. Kothar was also the patron of magic and inventor of magical incantations, creating words and spells that allowed him to empower the weapons he had made. One of his notable epithets was "The Opener", referring to his function as the opener of the window in Baal's palace through which Baal's rains could come and go to fertilize the earth and provide for the continuance of life.
