Shapash was the goddess of the sun, known as the "lamp of the gods", as well as the royal messenger of El. She was regarded as the judge of the gods and humans alike, fixing their fates and issuing wise judgments. Shapash descended into the underworld every night, with the gatekeeper Resheph opening the gate for her, which also allowed the newly departed dead to journey along the pathway leading to the underworld. She also held a prominent position in death and burial, and was invoked during funerary rites under the epithet špš pgr ("Shapash of the Corpse"), in which capacity she accompanied the spirits of the royal ancestors from the realm of the living in the palace to the realm of the dead in the underworld. Additionally, Shapash was closely related to the sacrificial pgr mortuary ritual, in which she guided the royal spirits from the underworld to the palace in order to partake in the feast.
