In his early days, he was often described as a reserved young man – quite serious and quiet. For this reason, he was nicknamed "The Polish Mozart" by his coach – "Mozart" being a nickname for a reserved, serious, artistic person. He was a perfectionist and a hard worker, with a natural talent for sports. He disliked sports events that required any sort of physical effort, such as most track and field events, but he excelled at skiing, skiing cross-country and downhill racing. His first victory was in 1969 in a downhill race in Zakopane. He won the downhill race in Innsbruck in 1974 and he also won the world championship in 1975. Małysz was the first to ski down K2 along with Reinhold Messner, on February 10, 1979. He has held the record for the highest altitude skier down K2 since that date.

Małysz's first major successes came in the early 1970s, when he won the first two World Cup events of his career, in Switzerland.
