The word "candidatus" was first used in a Roman law document dating from the year AD 524, when the Roman Emperor Justinian I decided to be ordained a priest. In order to do so, he needed to prove that he had the necessary qualities for the office (mainly knowledge, intelligence and wisdom). He therefore wrote a treatise in five books, called "Expositio in librum Valerii Patricii de simulatione" ("Exposition of Valerius Patavinus on simulation"), which was one of the most important legal documents of the Middle Ages. According to this exposition, simulation was an act of deceit committed by a person who pretends to be something that he or she is not.
