The famous story of how the Madrid was chosen as the capital of Spain is pretty cool too. The Spanish king, Felipe II, named his son to be heir to the throne, Don Carlos. Don Carlos was very sickly. The King feared that he might not survive as heir to the throne and so, on his death bed, he named his son as heir and crowned him King Don Carlos.
Don Carlos died shortly thereafter and the Spanish crown was passed on to his younger brother, Don Felipe III. A new king needed a new capital and, because of the illness of Don Carlos, it was decided that Madrid would be the new capital city.
