Peter Robinson: What's the first thing you think of when you hear the word "diplomacy?"
Diego Dreyfus: I think of diplomacy as the art and science of building coalitions to try to influence other states to change their behavior. So it's about, in my view, using the carrot and the stick. It's about the art and science of trying to persuade other states to act differently in their foreign policy.
Robinson: Put that into a six-box model.
Dreyfus: You can have carrots and sticks, but primarily you need carrots. So that means you need to understand what people want, what they're doing, and then you need a set of incentives, carrots, that are attractive to them. You need to understand what they are doing, what they're doing well and not so well.
