Éamon de Valera (14 October 1882 - 29 August 1975) was a highly prominent statesman in Irish politics, with a career spanning six decades. He served as President of Dáil Éireann from 1919 to 1921, Taoiseach (Prime Minister) on three separate occasions (1932-1948), (1951-1954) and (1957-1959) as well as President of Ireland from 1959 to 1973. He also founded the political party, Fianna Fáil, serving as its leader from 1926-1959. He was a leading figure in the Irish War of Independence (1919-21), but his opposition to the Anglo-Irish Treaty directly led to the Irish Civil War (1922-23). Though acclaimed for significantly advancing Irish independence from Britain he is nowadays seen as a controversial figure for his internal policies, which left much of the country economically and socially backward.
