In the late 1970s, Burnham met Jerry Salzman, who was then a professor at the New York Institute of Technology. Salzman was a big sports fan, so he asked her to play for the team in a tournament. He also asked her to be a business manager for the team, and in time she became a coach. She coached the team for more than ten years.
"I had a lot of fun," Burnham says. "It was a great time to be involved in sports; there was so much energy. I found it very challenging."
She also ventured into other sports, playing tennis and softball, and she even tried her hand at figure skating. But it wasn't until she became an avid runner that she felt like she hit her stride. "I love running," she says. "It's my passion."
