When she was sixteen years old she began attending Chilton, an all-girls Catholic boarding school. She quickly became close with her best friend, Rory Gilmore, daughter of Sookie and Lorelai's father Christopher.
Although she was smart, she had no interest in academics. Her interests were more in the arts, music, and fashion.
She eventually became the editor of the school newspaper, "The Chilton Scholastic", which her mother put her in charge of. Lorelai would often get only one, two, or three days to write an issue while left with the responsibility of editing it. As a result, her writing was often riddled with spelling mistakes.
At the end of her senior year of high school Lorelai received an acceptance letter to Harvard University on a full ride scholarship for creative writing. She had loved Harvard since she was a child, and was devastated that she would have to leave Chilton.
Throughout the series she is shown to still have a deep love for Chilton and its' students.
