The Fourth Wall is a concept developed by Margaret L. Anderson in 1969. In the book "Fourth Wall: The Intersections of Myth and Fiction" Anderson theorizes that the fourth wall of a fictional world is metaphorical, rather than literal. This wall, she argues, serves to establish a certain level of reality between the author and the audience. Thus, according to the Fourth Wall, "the audience is aware of the fact that they are watching a work of fiction." Anderson goes on to make a distinction between a fourth wall that allows the audience to see things differently (which she calls a "perceptual" fourth wall) and a fourth wall that allows the audience to look at things in the same way as the author (which she calls a "narratological" fourth wall). A perceptual fourth wall is generally seen in children's films, in which the characters talk directly to the audience and sometimes even interact with them. Anderson describes this as the "fictional audience's ability to see things from the author's point of view.
