    She was born on February 9, 1638. She was the only child of King Louis XIII of France, who died at the age of 26, and his wife Anne of Austria, who was a Habsburg Archduchess. She was named Marie, but from her father’s death in 1643, she became known as Mademoiselle de Nantes, a title which over the next several years was shortened to Mademoiselle de Nantes.

    Anne was married to her distant cousin Louis XIII at the age of eleven in 1639 and was widowed when he died at the age of 36 in 1643. Anne quickly remarried to her first cousin, Gaston, Duke of Orléans, who was a younger brother of her late husband. The marriage was meant to reinforce the ties between France and the House of Orléans and bring peace between the two houses.

    After her second marriage, Anne gave birth to six children, including the future Louis XIV.
