Anne was married to her distant cousin Louis XIII at the age of eleven in 1639 and was widowed when he died at the age of 36 in 1643. Anne quickly remarried to her first cousin, Gaston, Duke of Orléans, who was a younger brother of her late husband. The marriage was meant to reinforce the ties between France and the House of Orléans and bring peace between the two houses.
