    In the book, the narrator's personality is a result of an accident that happens to him while in his teens. The accident was caused by a chemical spill at the hospital where he was being treated for a broken arm. The chemical spill had been caused by a visiting scientist who had spilled a vial of a new chemical compound on the floor, where it mixed with an existing chemical compound and caused it to become unstable. The combination of the two chemicals eventually caused the vial to explode and cause the chemical spill that affected the narrator's personality.

    The narrator is the only person in his family, who suffers from this personality change. He has a special interest in science and technology since his accident, which drives him to become an inventor.
