    Hayashi's original work in cognitive psychology began with his unique approach to Jungian typology, which he calls "Fourth-Person Psychology". This theory of Jungian typology is based on the work of Carl Gustav Jung and is the subject of much of Hayashi's writing.

    In his book "Fourth-Person Psychology" (1991), Hayashi discussed a new approach to Jungian typology that he introduced as "third-person psychology". This new approach to Jungian typology is based on the idea that consciousness is independent of the brain.
