We think about the words we say before we say them. We analyze what we think is most likely to happen, how the other person will respond, and how we will feel after.
We know that giving and receiving hugs are great, but we're afraid of how it will make others feel. Maybe we can't give a hug, but we can hold hands or hold someone's hand for a little while. We may also be afraid of how other people will react to us being affectionate with them. Maybe they'll judge us, or maybe they won't care.
If a hug is suddenly given to us, we think it's because we've done something wrong. We have to evaluate the situation and mentally prepare ourselves to handle it.
