She says she grew up in an environment that was “very tough.” Her parents, both Japanese immigrants from the islands of Okinawa, had moved to Seattle to work in the Boeing airplane-assembly plant. Her father studied engineering at the University of Washington, and her mother worked at Boeing. She says they were very strict, and they expected perfection. “We were not allowed to talk back to our parents. You always had to be polite. You always had to do what they asked you to do.” Her parents also would not allow her to play with dolls or dress up, because she says she was always in need of attention.
Growing up, she had a twin brother who was mentally disabled. She says her parents tried to figure out what happened to him when he was a baby and couldn’t find any answers. They hired a psychiatrist who diagnosed him with a brain-stem tumor. But she says her brother had been like that since he was a baby; she has no idea how he got that way.
