    Ruling Records

Cao Cao's greatest contributions to Chinese history are his military campaigns and his role as "Han Emperor" (the title given to each successive Chinese emperor).

In 247 BC, Cao Cao, along with General Sima Yi and General Zhang Liao, defeated two armies sent by the Han Dynasty (one led by Yuan Shu and one led by Dong Zhuo) at the Battle of Xiapi. This battle marked the first major victory of the Three Kingdoms period. In 197 BC, Cao Cao led an army to invade southern China from the north. He successfully defeated the rulers of some minor states and captured over 80 cities in southern China.

Cao Cao, courtesy name Mengde, was a Chinese warlord, statesman and poet. He was the penultimate grand chancellor of the Eastern Han dynasty who rose to great power in the final years of the dynasty. As one of the central figures of the Three Kingdoms period, he laid the foundations for what was to become the state of Cao Wei and was posthumously honoured as "Emperor Wu of Wei" although he never officially claimed the title Emperor of China or proclaimed himself "Son of Heaven" during his lifetime. He remains a controversial historical figure, and is often portrayed as a cruel and merciless tyrant in subsequent literature; however, he has also been praised as a brilliant ruler, military genius, and great poet with unrivalled charisma who treated his subordinates like his family. During the fall of the Eastern Han dynasty, Cao Cao was able to secure most of Northern China - the most populated and developed part of China.
