In the first season, Algernon is an ESTJ who functions best in a structured environment. He is a loyal and responsible worker and in his words, "a good soldier." He is shown to be a firm disciplinarian and has a reputation for toughness and discipline. He has difficulty expressing his emotions, which lead to his being thought of as "aloof" or "cold." He is shown to be highly efficient, even to the point of being considered robotic or cold by others. His setbacks are shown to be numerous because of his inability to express his feelings, which leads to his feelings of being unappreciated. In the season two episode "A Room Of One's Own," he is shown to have an extremely close relationship with his wife, Marion. He is shown to be extremely patient and understanding with her, considering her eccentricities.
In the second season, Algernon's personality becomes more nuanced. He becomes more open about his feelings and less rigid about how he acts in a certain situation. He becomes less fearful of expressing his feelings and finds a close friend in his new secretary, Cecily Howe.
