"I'm a realist at heart. I'm a realist who has a vision for what he wants to do, and I'm going to go out there and get it done." That's what Trent Boyett told me when we spoke in April. Boyett is a second-year defensive end from the University of Notre Dame, where it's a tradition for players to get a summer job. Boyett was working at a Wal-Mart in his hometown of LaFayette, Indiana, when I spoke with him. He wanted to know what I thought of his chances of making the Indianapolis Colts' roster as an undrafted free agent.
As it turned out, Boyett didn't make any friends in the Colts' organization during mini-camp, pre-season or training camp. That's because he had some attitude issues that were not appreciated by coaches or teammates. You can see the results on the field now. Boyett has been inactive for six straight games. He is wearing No. 90 now, which is what they gave him when he signed with the Colts after being drafted in the fourth round of the 2013 NFL draft.
