Although he has been doing consulting since he was 12, Mr. Chan hasn’t had a full-time job in what he describes as “a very traditional job” since his early twenties.
“It’s so frustrating because I feel like I have so much to offer,” he says. “It’s like this huge gap.”
And, he admits, it can be hard to find the right fit.
“I don’t want to be a drone,” he says. “I want to be a creative thinker and solve interesting problems. And that means finding the right person to work with, having the right opportunity and having the right boss.”
The problem is that he feels his skills are rarely used in the workplace. “If you put those skills to work in a traditional company, it doesn’t really produce much,” he says.
