His parents would often go away from the farm to do their own thing, leaving him in charge of the farm animals. He got along well with the animals, but his skills with woodworking often caused him to get into difficult situations. When he was 12, Esbern went to live with his uncle, who was a blacksmith. He was able to help his uncle with his work, and he became skilled at creating all sorts of doodads and other useful things. One day, his uncle took Esbern to meet the local lord, who was impressed by Esbern's skill at creating jewelry. The lord offered Esbern a job as an apprentice, which he accepted.
Esbern's apprenticeship was quite enjoyable. He got to learn so much about metal-working, and he got to travel around Skyrim doing repairs and selling weapons and jewelry to local traders. The job also helped him become familiar with the Nords of Skyrim.
