The Dwarves of the Third Age
The Dwarves were a race of beings that fell into the stone. They were made from the earth and the stone, which was also their armor. They were very strong and able to live under the ground for hundreds of years. In the First Age, they created the great halls of Khazad-dûm, which had been built before they fell into the stone.
In the Second Age, they were forced to live underground because of Sauron. They were not given a choice to remain with the Elves, and their only choice was to become a servant race for the Shadow that was Sauron. They still lived under the ground, but they were still a part of Middle-earth.
In the Third Age, though they were not given much choice in their own fate, they chose to stay in Middle-earth.
