AS: How do you capture a sense of a family’s history in a single photo?
HK: The thing that was most important to me was to capture the essence of the family in one moment. It was important to me that the family had a sense of ongoing time, an essence that would be captured in the photo. I think this is why the two photos of the father are so different. I went back to the family a few times during the project, but I was never able to capture a sense of the family’s history in a single moment.
AS: What made you want to pursue this project?
HK: The first reason is because I wanted to show people how important the family is to us. The second reason is that I wanted to show that we can make what we have more beautiful through our actions. I think it’s important for us to live with dignity and appreciate our needs.
