In an article for the journal "Personality and Individual Differences", Domoto and his colleagues described how they would measure personality. The authors noted that one of the most common methods of assessing personality is the Big Five, which consists of Extraversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, Neuroticism, and Openness to Experience. However, the authors noted that the Big Five has been criticized because it does not take into account "temperament," or individual differences in personality. In order to take temperament into account, the authors conducted a study in which they asked students to complete the NEO-PI-R (NEO Personality Inventory Revised). They found that the NEO-PI-R measured personality better than the Big Five, which led them to coin the term "Temperament and Personality Inventory".
