Jean-Michel Jarre was born in 1953, in Lyon. He first became interested in electronic music, after witnessing the performance of electronic music by Jean-Claude Vannier at the Festival de Périgueux in 1970.
In July 1974, Jean-Michel Jarre returned to France after living for six years in Canada, where he had been studying image processing at the University of Montreal. He was awarded a scholarship from the French state to study mathematics at the École Polytechnique in Paris. While there, he came up with the idea of constructing an electric piano that would be triggered by a sequencer. His first electronic instruments were made of audio tape recorders, which he used to make electronic music with traditional instruments. He received a diploma in electronic engineering at the École des Mines de Paris and then worked as an engineer for a radio company.
In 1979, he started his own company, called Jean-Michel Jarre Associés (also known as JMJ), and began selling synthesizers and his first computerized music sequencer.
