    Gessle's childhood has been described as "idyllic" and "normal". After his parents divorced when he was five years old, he and his siblings were raised by their mother.

    He told "Mojo" magazine: "I was very happy and I had a normal and idyllic childhood. I was a happy kid and I had a normal and idyllic upbringing." After their parents' divorce, Gessle and his siblings moved to his mother's home in Örnsköldsvik, Västerbotten, Sweden, which is where Gessle spent most of his childhood. His mother was a housewife and his father worked as a carpenter. He went to a local school, but when his mother remarried, he moved to a boarding school in his stepfather's home town of Gällivare. As a teenager, Gessle would hitchhike to Stockholm to visit friends in the music scene in that city. While in Stockholm, he worked in the building trade. He was interested in music from an early age, being inspired by Swedish pop star Ingela "Pling" Forsman.

    Per Håkan Gessle born 12 January 1959) is a Swedish pop singer, songwriter and musician. He is best known as the male half of Roxette, whom he formed with Marie Fredriksson in 1986. The duo achieved international success in the late-1980s and early-1990s with their albums Look Sharp! (1988) and Joyride (1991), and topped the charts in the US four times, most notably with "It Must Have Been Love" which was featured in the film Pretty Woman. Prior to the formation of Roxette, he had a successful career in native Sweden as the frontman for Gyllene Tider. The band released three number-one albums during the early 1980s but disbanded shortly after their fourth effort, The Heartland Café (1984).
