    Cheb Bilal was born on July 23, 1966 in Cherchell, near Algiers, but spent all his youth in Oran where he grew up and attended the conservatory.

    He was raised by his grandparents after his parents divorced when he was only 3 months old.

    He performed at the start of his career in weddings and parties in Oran and its surroundings, then founded his group El Ahouar in the 1980s and won, in 1987, the first prize in a song competition1, he had a certain success but which did not go beyond the region of western Algeria.

    In 1989, after his arrival in Marseille, he worked in a bar.

    In 1997, he released his first album Babor Li Jebni (Cursed be the boat that brought me) which was a success in Algeria with the songs Ghorba and L'hem.

    In 2002, he signed with Universal and released a new album Sidi Sidi.
