He was born in Niigata Prefecture on June 17, 1948. He has four children and is divorced. His hobbies are collecting art and gardening.
When he was a child, Sato dreamed of becoming a painter. He had an interest in art from the age of ten. He graduated from high school with the highest score in his class. He began his university studies in architecture, but left after one year because he found it boring. He then studied flower arranging and calligraphy for one year before graduating from the College of Art, Tokyo University of the Arts.
He was admitted to the United States Army's Intelligence and Security Command School at Fort Holabird, Maryland. In 1969 he began studying at the University of California, Berkeley, where he earned a master's degree in architectural design.
In 1974, he became an assistant professor at the University of California, Berkeley School of Architecture. In 1978, Sato became a professor at the University of California, Berkeley School of Architecture and Urban Design, where he taught until his retirement in 2007.
