He began his university studies in architecture, but left after one year because he found it boring. He was admitted to the United States Army's Intelligence and Security Command School at Fort Holabird, Maryland. In 1969 he began studying at the University of California, Berkeley, where he earned a master's degree in architectural design.
In 1974, he became an assistant professor at the University of California, Berkeley School of Architecture. In 1978, Sato became a professor at the University of California, Berkeley School of Architecture and Urban Design, where he taught until his retirement in 2007.
