Early Life
Benjamin Ferel was born in Haiti on the day the country was liberated from the French. He grew up poor; his father was a fisherman who earned very little money. His mother, who worked as a hairdresser, often went days without food because they could not afford to buy it. As a result, Benjamin gained a lot of weight, which would become an early pattern in his life.
He was always quiet and withdrawn, different from his family and friends. In the past he had a very close friend who used to accompany him to school every day and would always be the first one to sit with him at his desk. The two were inseparable until one day, Benjamin’s friend disappeared from school without telling their parents where he was going. When he returned home months later, he told them he was living with another family. The families were never heard from again.
