Lü Bu was a Han Chinese officer who served under the warlord Yuan Shao during the late Eastern Han dynasty. He was known for his bravery, his loyalty to his lord, and his ruthlessness. He led his army in Yuan Shaos assaults on the Han central government in the Yellow Turban Rebellion.
Lü Bu was born in Qiao County (譙縣), Pei State (沛國), which is located in present-day Jiangsu. His original family name was Lu. Lü Bu's father, Lu Xun (陸雲), was a scholar who enjoyed writing poems. His mother, Lady Yun, was a descendant of the noble Liu family. Lü Bu had an elder brother, Liu Zhiying (劉治英). He was also said to have had a younger sister, named Xiao Ma.
When Lü Bu was young, he studied under the famous Confucian scholar Han Yu. Han Yu, who generally loved young men, loved Lü Bu so much that he refused to allow Lady Yun to remarry after her husband died.
Lü Bu was a military general and warlord who lived during the late Eastern Han dynasty of Imperial China. Originally a subordinate of a minor warlord Ding Yuan, he betrayed and murdered Ding and defected to Dong Zhuo, the warlord who controlled the Han central government in the early 190s. In 192, he turned against Dong Zhuo and killed him after being instigated by Wang Yun and Shisun Rui, but was later defeated and driven away by Dong Zhuo's followers.
