I've always been a late bloomer, and everything I've ever done in my life I've done on my own terms. It's all been on my own terms.
I'm a writer, and it's not something I was ever really good at. I never really cared about the craft, but I did care about the people, and I wanted to share their stories and make them a little more than just a couple of words on a page. I wanted to make them live, and flesh them out.
As a kid, I loved reading and writing, but I didn't see myself as a writer. I was always the kid who would write stories and try to get them published, or get them published in the school newspaper, but nothing ever happened with that.
I went to school for journalism, but by the end of high school, I'd only written one short story that got published in the school paper. It was a short story about a school shooting, and it was called "The Truth." But that was it. I wasn't good at writing like that; writing fiction was different for me.
