Nishihara, who is in his 30s, was born in Tokyo and moved to the United States when he was 3. He was interested in computers from an early age, says his father, Norio Nishihara, a computer scientist at the University of Miami.
"He would always build things without any tools," his father remembers. "I know when he was in the third grade, he made something that looked like an electronic circuit board."
By the time he was in high school, Nishihara was programming games in BASIC. "He had an understanding of computers that was far beyond what other people his age had," his father says. "He was always curious about how things worked."
Nishihara attended the University of California in Berkeley in 1987. He studied engineering and physics and like many of his peers at the time, he was hooked on the Internet. As he got older, he began to realize that he didn't want to spend his life building games or programming.
