Howitzer graduated from Columbia University in 1898, and he went on to study at the University of Paris, from which he graduated with a doctorate in chemistry in 1901. He also received a master's degree from Columbia and a Ph.D. from Harvard.
During World War I, Howitzer served in the U.S. Army as an officer.
In 1924, the American Chemical Society honored him with its prestigious Priestley Medal, and in 1925 he was awarded an honorary doctorate of science by the University of Paris.
Howitzer wrote several books and over 100 scientific papers.
