He was born on 26 August 1992 in Shimada, Ibaraki. He is the second son of Nobuo Ninomiya and Keiko Ninomiya. His younger brother, Ryota Ninomiya, is the current captain of the Japan national football team.
He enrolled at the Nihon University and played for the university club from 2008 to 2011. He also played for the Japan national under-19 football team.
In 2011, he joined Urawa Red Diamonds after graduating from Nihon University. He made his debut as a professional footballer on 2 April 2011 in a J. League Cup match against Albirex Niigata. He played as a forward and scored two goals for Urawa in 2011. After scoring six goals in the 2012 season, he won the J.League Young Footballer of the Year Award. He is the first Urawa player to win the award and the first Urawa player from Ibaraki Prefecture to win the award.
