Jack Cabot, the original character who first appeared in the “The Adventure of the Copper Beeches” in the July 1924 issue of The Strand magazine, is based on the real-life British poet, novelist, and art critic, John Ruskin.
The story is about a man named John Cabot, recently arrived in England from Italy, where he has become involved in some shady business involving some pre-Columbian artifacts. Cabot has written to his friend, Dr. Watson, for some advice. Watson responds with a letter of his own, which Cabot incorporates into his own letter. This back-and-forth letter writing format was modeled after the stories Watson wrote for the Strand magazine.
The “A Study in Scarlet” short story that introduces Sherlock Holmes was also published in The Strand magazine. These three stories are considered Holmes’ first appearances in print.
It’s thought that the character of Sherlock Holmes was inspired by Col. John Watson’s father, Dr. Joseph Bell, who had retired from the army after serving as an army doctor during the Crimean War.
