    When Hubbard was born, she was the youngest of five children; her father was an alcoholic and her mother an alcoholic-in-denial. The family was constantly moving, and Hubbard never knew who her father was. When she was seven, her family moved to Houston, Texas, where she attended St. John’s School.

    Hubbard attended Stanford University; she majored in history and English. She spoke Japanese fluently, and this fact cost her the chance to teach Japanese at the university.

    After graduating Stanford, Hubbard went to Japan, where she taught English. She met her first husband, whom she later divorced, and she had a son with him, who is now in his 40s.

    Hubbard returned to the United States in the late 1970s and moved to Japan, where she taught English. She married again in the 1980s, then divorced again in the 1990s.

    Hubbard began writing books in 1992, when she published her first novel, "The Truth About Forever.

    Laurel Hubbard is a New Zealand transgender weightlifter. Selected to compete at the 2020 Summer Olympics, she will be the first openly transgender athlete to compete in the Olympic Games. Hubbard is ranked seventh in the IWF's women's +87kg division.
