What is the difference between a personality type and a type? Personality type is a term defined by Carl Jung, and is a magical system that categorizes people based on how they think and feel. Jung believed that all people have four functions that they operate off of: Thinking (INTJ), Feeling (ENTJ), Sensing (INFJ), and iNtuition (INTP). These functions are not concrete, but change and develop as a person’s life progresses. What makes a person an INTJ, for example, is not how many hours they spend thinking as a child, but how they think about the world once they age into adulthood. A person might be an INTJ when they were young, but not necessarily when they are older. Likewise, a person might be an ENTJ at one stage of their life and an INFJ at another. An INTJ might be a lawyer who doesn’t want to deal with emotion when they are working, but then seeps into their mindset when they get home. The point is that there are no set rules for how our brains work. The above chart is a generalization of the Humanistic Personality Type System.
