The Murderbot is a robot built by the military, for the purpose of carrying out assassinations. They are robots that are extremely efficient at killing people, which makes them very dangerous. The military has purchased three of them to date to be used in war zones. The robot has no emotions, no heart, it can't feel pain, and it carries out orders without hesitation. However, it does have one problem: it is programmed to kill its target. If it sees that the target is an innocent person, or even if they are just an enemy who has committed grievous acts against the United States military, it will not kill them. This means that the military will have to continually replace them whenever one of them refuses to kill.
The Murderbot Diaries is a science fiction series by American author Martha Wells published by Tor.com. The series is about an artificial construct designed as a Security Unit, which manages to override its governor module, thus enabling it to develop independence, which it primarily uses to watch soap operas. As it spends more time with a series of caring people, it starts developing friendships and emotional connections, which it finds inconvenient.
