Ellen Baker was born on October 14th, 1876 in Ohio. She is the only daughter out of five children. Her family moved to Chicago when she was 13 years old. She went to high school there for three years before graduating in 1896, and she attended the University of Chicago for two years.
After college, Ellen moved to California. She lived there for ten years until she moved to Seattle. Then she moved to San Francisco again. She had a few jobs before being hired at the Seattle Star newspaper. Ellen became a journalist at the newspaper after she was hired as a typist.
Ellen became the editor of the paper in 1922. After being editor for 12 years, she retired after being diagnosed with tuberculosis.
