Abidin was born in Baku, Azerbaijan. He is of Jewish descent. His parents were originally from Israel, but before the war his father fled to Azerbaijan, where he met his future wife. After the war Abidin's father returned to Israel while his mother stayed in Azerbaijan with Abidin's older brother.
Abidin was educated in Israel, Azerbaijan, France, and Germany. He is fluent in Russian, French, English, Hebrew, and Azerbaijani.
Abidin has been married to Tzachi Vaknin since July 9, 2002. They have two children. Abidin also features in the music video for "Khalig" by Tzachi Vaknin.
In 2008 Abidin published a book titled "The Case of the Invisible Prince". In this book he writes about his journey as a chess player and as a father.
