    How Lee got his start

Lee's father was a sharecropper, so he started out in life with little in the way of material possessions. Music was his escape, and he wanted to be a country musician.

He worked hard to get where he did. He was able to save up enough money to buy his first guitar when he was just 13 years old. By the time he was 16, he'd already started playing music in bands. At 18, he had his first recording contract with Sun Records.

Although Lewis was a gifted musician, he didn't start putting out hits until years later. He was signed to another label in 1954, but he didn't make it big until 1958, when he moved to Memphis and signed with Columbia Records.

His first big hit was "His Latest Flame," which reached #2 on the Billboard pop charts in 1959.

Jerry Lee Lewis (born September 29, 1935) is an American singer-songwriter, musician, and pianist, often known by his nickname, The Killer. He has been described as "rock & roll's first great wild man."
