Predictably Irrational
In the beginning of the book, I mentioned how I was drawn to the concept of irrationality, which I later realized described how my brain’s pattern-recognition systems worked. Irrationality is not necessarily bad, but it does tend to be particularly powerful, especially in the world of emotions and social situations. This is why it is so important to be aware of your irrational tendencies, because they can often be used against you, and you will have to develop a disciplined mental system to deal with them.
The following is a list of the most common irrational thoughts and behaviors:
• You tend to jump to conclusions without sufficient data.
• You believe that you are more intelligent than you actually are.
• You are highly sensitive to criticism.
• You are prone to putting others down because they are not as intelligent as you.
• You believe that people who are smarter than you do not care as much about you.
• You ignore your own feelings in favor of what you think other people want you to feel at the moment.
