The Tao Te Ching is an ancient Chinese text, but its teachings have been passed down through the ages. It’s a very deep, philosophical text, which has been the subject of many commentaries and interpretations over the centuries. There are a great many interpretations of the Tao Te Ching out there, and most of them are fascinating in their own right. But today I’m going to talk about one particular interpretation that I found to be particularly insightful.
In Tao Te Ching, the Tao is often referred to symbolically as a “Great Mother”, which is a very interesting metaphor. In this view of things, the Tao is seen as a transcendental force that exists independently of the “real world”, and is not subordinate to any mundane laws of physics or biology. From this perspective, being a spiritual being in a physical world is very much a part of human nature.

Philosophical Taoism emphasizes various themes found in the Daodejing and Zhuangzi such as "nonaction" (wu wei), emptiness, detachment, receptiveness, spontaneity, the strength of softness, the relativism of human values, and the search for a long life. Religious Taoism is not clearly separated from philosophy, but incorporates a number of supernatural beliefs in gods, ghosts, ancestral spirits, and practices such as Taoist alchemy and qigong.
