Myers-Briggs is a popular personality test designed by Isabel Myers, a mother of four children, and her daughter Katherine Briggs. Isabel Myers was a layperson interested in psychology and after reading a book that discussed the work of Carl Jung, she became absolutely fascinated with psychological typology. In their book, Gifts Differing: Understanding Personality Type, Isabel and Katherine Myers described 16 different “types,” which they labeled as temperament types.
In the Myers-Briggs test, each person is assessed based on four dichotomies: extroversion vs. introversion, sensing vs. intuition, thinking vs. feeling, and judging vs. perceiving. These are all psychological variables that are supposed to help us understand one another better by highlighting our differences.
