As an example of Bakunin’s creativity and resourcefulness, we can look at his ideas on religion. Bakunin, like Marx, saw religion as an expression of the superstitions and barbarism of the oppressed and exploited classes. Bakunin proposed that the worker should replace the priest, and that religion should be abolished altogether, or at least restricted to the private sphere. This is the same position that the left has always maintained: that religion is a tool of the ruling classes and that religion should be abolished.
But Bakunin also recognized that religion was also a form of rebellion. He said:
“The idea of God is an essential element of every religion because it is the idea of a Supreme Being, who is called by different names, such as Creator, Providence, Supreme Good, etc., but who in all religions is considered to be a being infinitely superior to man. It is in the name of this Supreme Being that man performs his acts of rebellion or submission, by which he declares his submission or rebellion. The great prophets and apostles of every religion have been rebels against this Supreme Being, and have preached submission to him.

He is considered among the most influential figures of anarchism and one of the principal founders of the social anarchist tradition. Bakunin's enormous prestige as an activist made him one of the most famous ideologues in Europe, gaining substantial influence amongst radicals throughout Russia and Europe.
